A Bird's World

About the Exhibition

A Bird's World is a permanent exhibit that features the Museum’s extraordinary collection of mounted birds, displaying over 300 species found in New England. Interactive components show you how to sharpen your wildlife observation skills and recognize bird behaviors.

Birds naturally detect predators. Their sounds and movements indicate hidden predators lurking around them all the time. Here, you can learn to interpret the bird language taking place just outside your window at home.

Test your sneaking skills and see if you can get past different birds without them alerting other animals to your presence. Learn to identify birds from a distance by recognizing unique flight patterns. Practice your own flying technique in the Bird Walk.

About the Software

A Bird's World has one interactive software experience that I helped develop in collaboration with a cross-disciplinary team of educators, developers, designers, and researchers.

Exhibit Interactive Software Experience

Created using Unity and Visual Studio with C# and Kinect 2.0 SDK

Sneak

A full-body experience using the Kinect that lets visitors test their sneaking skills. Visitors try to get past a robin or wood thrush without the bird alerting other animals to their presence.

The software for this activity uses image processing of the Kinect depth image to isolate the visitor from the background without requiring full-body tracking.
